Monte Dolack

28" x 24"

1997

In this image, from a 1997 acrylic painting, Monte is featuring the famous "Big Medicine"- a white buffalo born on the National Bison Range, Flathead Indian Reservation, Montana. Many Native American people honor the white buffalo as sacred. Big Medicine lived on the National Bison Range from 1933-1959. His body is preserved and on display at the Montana Historical Society. Underneath Big Medicine's hooves are painted buffalo skulls, bones, garbage, Native American war tools and other items that represent the buffalo and human interaction throughout the course of time.

This poster was created for the Governor's Cup, an annual running event in Montana.
